25. Alfa Romeo 4C

The Alfa Romeo 4C is a car built almost entirely around the experience of driving. With a carbon-fiber monocoque, mid-mounted 1.75-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive, and extremely low curb weight, the 4C delivers an intensity that its modest horsepower figure doesn’t fully convey. The manual steering is exceptionally heavy and direct, the chassis feels incredibly responsive, and the engine produces an entertaining combination of turbocharged torque and exotic exhaust noise. Inside, the philosophy is similarly uncompromising: the cabin is sparse, visibility is limited, the ride is firm, and practicality is almost nonexistent. There is little insulation between the driver and the mechanical components, which makes even ordinary roads feel like an event. The trade-off is that the 4C can be tiring in traffic and awkward around town, but on a winding road or open stretch of highway, its light weight and mid-engine balance make it remarkably engaging.

Reliability is somewhat less straightforward than the car’s relatively simple formula might suggest. The 4C’s carbon-fiber chassis and core mechanical components are generally robust, but ownership can be complicated by its limited production numbers, specialized construction, and Alfa-specific parts and electronics. The 1.75-liter turbo engine itself has a relatively good reputation when properly maintained, while the TCT dual-clutch transmission, cooling system, suspension components, and various electrical systems are worth inspecting carefully on a used example. Parts and specialized repairs can also be considerably more expensive and difficult to source than those for a more conventional sports car. Ultimately, the 4C isn’t a car you buy for practicality or low-cost ownership; it’s a lightweight, almost race-car-like experience disguised as a road-legal Italian sports car. If driving feel matters more to you than comfort, refinement, or convenience, very few cars deliver quite as much drama from such a small package.
