8. 2nd Gen Honda CR-V
The second-generation Honda CR-V is an exceptionally practical and reliable compact SUV, with the durable K24 engine capable of very high mileage when properly maintained, although buyers should watch for transmission issues, A/C failures, electrical gremlins, and rear-differential binding on AWD models.
The second-generation Honda CR-V is one of those vehicles that has aged exceptionally well, combining excellent practicality, good fuel economy, simple mechanicals, and strong overall reliability. The 2.4L K24 four-cylinder isn’t particularly powerful, but it’s well suited to the CR-V and can easily exceed 300,000 miles when properly maintained. The interior is remarkably spacious for a compact crossover, with a flat floor, reclining rear seats, huge cargo area, and even Honda’s famous fold-out picnic table. The Real Time 4WD system also provides useful traction in snow and light off-road conditions, although it’s not intended for serious off-roading. The biggest drawbacks are road noise, relatively basic interior and audio equipment, and the lack of more powerful engine options. Overall, it’s an exceptionally practical vehicle for someone who wants inexpensive transportation that can also handle camping, outdoor activities, and winter driving.
As with most Hondas of this era, maintenance is the key to long-term reliability. The K24 is generally an excellent engine, but potential issues include front crankshaft seal leaks, exhaust cam-lobe wear, and timing-chain tensioner wear. Regular oil changes, quality oil, spark plugs, valve adjustments around 100,000 miles, and proper transmission-fluid service go a long way toward preventing these problems. Other common trouble spots include minor electrical issues, transmission problems—particularly harsh 1–2 shifts on some early examples—EVAP P1457 faults, failing A/C compressors, and binding in the rear differential. That last issue is particularly important on AWD models: if you hear a shudder or chatter while making tight turns, the rear differential fluid may need to be replaced with Honda’s genuine Dual Pump Fluid. With those areas addressed and a good maintenance history, the second-gen CR-V remains a very strong choice for inexpensive, durable transportation.
